Harper government should call for Mubarak's immediate resignation
'We are disappointed that you, and your government, have not yet called for the immediate resignation of the corrupt and illegitimate government of Hosni Mubarak.' - James Clancy NUPGE national president.
Ottawa (2 Feb. 2011) - In a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has called on the Canadian government to demand the immediate resignation of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak.
National president James Clancy writes that the "inspiring display of people standing up against an authoritarian regime and demanding their democratic and human rights resonates with all of us."
"As millions of Egyptians protest today against Mubarak’s stubborn hold on power there can no longer be any acceptance that his government has any real public support."
He further says that the union is disappointed that the Harper government has
"not yet called for the immediate resignation of the corrupt and illegitimate government of Hosni Mubarak and reject any desperate effort by Mubarak to appoint a successor. The Egyptian people have made their rejection of his government clear. It is time the rest of the world supports them."

The National Union further calls on the government of Canada to:
increase its diplomatic efforts to convince Mubarak to abdicate the presidency;
reject any attempt by Mubarak to appoint a successor;
support the Egyptian people’s demands for wide-spread democratic reforms;
demand the government of Egypt respect the right of its people to protest and demonstrate and to condemn any use of force on the protesters; and
recognize the Egyptian Federation for Independent Unions and encourage future Egyptian governments to respect the fundamental human right of Freedom of Association.
Clancy stresses that "Canada’s standing in the international community has been tarnished over the past decade. The respect this country used to enjoy in the global community has eroded."
"As the dramatic events in Egypt unfold, it is time for us to regain our principled support for democratic and human rights in the world. I urge you and your government to speak out on this matter."
