Montreal Mosque Sermon on protecting Churches

Sermon of Shikh Saied Fawaz, Imam Mosque Aloumah Alislamih, Down town Montreal, on Friday January 7th, 2011

The horrible and deadly attack on al-qidiseen church In Alexandria, Egypt, and on the churches in Iraq which has led to the killing and injury of tens of innocent Christian and Muslims people, is a heinous crime and a sinful act. Muslims around the globe denounce and condemn such a horrible crimes that target the lives of innocent people irrespective of their faith or ethnicity.

In Islam the protection of places of worship of non-Muslims is guaranteed under the law. Throughout history Muslims have shouldered the well established Islamic duty of protecting non-Muslims lives, properties and places of worship. Let us read the Covenant of Omar (RAA) in which he said after In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. This is an assurance of peace and protection given by the servant of Allah Omar Ibn Khattab, Commander of the Believers to the people of Ilia' (al-Quds / Jerusalem). He gave them an assurance of protection for their lives, property, church and crosses as well as the sick and healthy and all its religious community.

Their churches shall not be occupied, demolished nor taken away wholly or in part. None of their crosses nor property shall be seized. They shall not be intimidated in their religion nor shall any of them be injured. This is the real position of Islam towards the non-Muslims.

So such an act of crime will not help Muslims nor will it help the image of Islam. Weak Muslims government makes it easy for their enemies to interfere and destroy the peaceful co-existence of their citizens. That is why Muslims scholars and laymen condemn such a bloody crimes that target the peaceful Muslims and non-Muslims in Egypt or any part of the globe.
