ECCD demands a strong position from the Canadian government regarding Egyptian Minister's threats to "Slice" Critics Abroad, during her visit to Canada
- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -
(Toronto, July 24th, 2019)
During her visit to Canada, Egyptian Minister of Emigration, Nabila Makram, has threatened to "slice" critics of her regime.
"Anyone who speaks against Egypt abroad will be sliced", she said during a meeting held earlier this week with the Egyptian Canadian community in Toronto, making a slaughter gesture with her hand.
We, Canadian Egyptians feel threatened since many of us publicly and openly criticize the Egyptian regime's human rights abuses and other policies and practices.
How can Canadians feel safe when a direct threat like that is made by a Minister of a regime that well know for systematic violation of Human Rights, on Canadian soil.
The Canadian government should take this matter seriously. We all know what happened to Jamal Khashoggi by the Saudi regime (a close ally to the Egyptian regime) in a sovereign country.
